And when the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, Massachusetts went all in – expanding Medicaid, setting up an insurance exchange, and working to make coverage more affordable. If the Republicans in Washington repeal and run, we here in Massachusetts stand to lose a lot:
- Pre-existing conditions. The
Affordable Care Act stops insurance companies from denying coverage to the 2.9
million people in Massachusetts with preexisting conditions.
- Lifetime caps. The Affordable
Care Act ended lifetime limits on 2.5 million people’s plans.
- Preventive care. The Affordable Care
Act has made preventive services like flu shots and cancer screenings free for
almost 3.4 million people in Massachusetts.
- Discrimination against women. The
Affordable Care Act prevents insurance companies from discriminating against
women or charging people more depending on their
occupation.
- Coverage for young
people. The Affordable Care Act allows students and young people to
stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26.
- Prescription drugs. The Affordable Care
Act helps the people of Massachusetts on Medicare save, on average, over $1000
on prescription drugs.
- Small business tax breaks. The Affordable Care Act provides tax breaks for small businesses who provide health care.
Our health care laws aren’t perfect. We need to do a lot more to bring down the costs of insurance for working families. But we cannot and will not allow Donald Trump and the GOP to recklessly strip away coverage for millions of people who desperately need their health care.
Our first fight to save health care is this Sunday in Boston. Will you join us? Sign up now to help us fight back.
